Saxophone classification:
The saxophone family, from large to small, is: double bass saxophone, bass saxophone, upper bass saxophone, tenor saxophone, C saxophone, alto saxophone, F treble saxophone, treble saxophone, C treble saxophone, ultra-treble saxophone.
Saxophone has a variety of range and tonality, among which the alto, alto, tenor, and alto are the most common.Classical saxophone is mainly alto saxophone, while in jazz and pop music, alto and tenor are mainly used. All saxophone fingering is basically the same, and the player can change the instrument without fingering practice.
The Soprano Saxophone is usually in B-flat. It is the second highest-pitched instrument in the saxophone family. Only this is the Soprano saxophone, and the volume of the tube is also the second smallest. The common ones are straight pipes, slightly curved necks or shapes similar to alto saxophones.Compared with the clarinet, the treble saxophone is louder and more penetrating. However, due to the small tube body, it is more difficult for the high-pitched part to control the pitch and it is more difficult to get started. The treble saxophone is mainly used for solo, and it is often used instead of the oboe in woodwind quintets.Famous treble saxophone players are Sydney Bechet, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Key and so on.
Alto Saxophone (Alto Saxophone) is the most common saxophone, E flat, and it is also the saxophone most used in classical music ensembles.Due to the moderate distance between the buttons, the breath requirements and the difficulty of mouth control are between the treble saxophone and the tenor saxophone, as well as the relatively cheap price and easy handling, it has become the most commonly used saxophone for beginners. The alto saxophone has a clearer tone than the tenor and a milder tone than the treble. The alto saxophone forms the most important part of the saxophone part of the wind band, and it occupies the same important position as the tenor in the jazz big band formation. It appears relatively rarely as a solo instrument.Alto saxophone is the most representative type of the saxophone family.Famous alto saxophone players are jazz: Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Garrett, classical music: Marcel Mule, Sigurd Raschèr and so on.
Tenor saxophone (Tenor Saxophone) is usually in B-flat, the shape is slightly larger than that of alto saxophone, the front end of the elbow is more curved, and the tone is gentle and steady. In wind bands, the number of tenor sax is less than that of alto, and it is generally used as an auxiliary role with the same music score as the bass horn and trombone. And in jazz, the tenor plays a central role.In the 1920s, Coleman Hawkins' hoarse and heavy voice redefined people's concept of tenor timbre.Later John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and Michael Brecker established the personality of the tenor voice step by step.
The upper bass saxophone (Baritone Saxophone) is usually in E flat, which is a relatively rare type among the four.It is larger in size and weight, and it is about twice as close to the midrange.Few people use it as a solo instrument, but in a saxophone quartet or jazz big band, the upper and lower saxophone supports other sounds with its low and thick tone, maintaining a stable pace of music with a relatively simple playing. In wind bands, it often plays a similar role to the bass horn, sometimes reminiscent of the sound of the cello.Famous performers include Gerry Mulligan.
Other saxophones include Soprano Saxophone (Soprano Saxophone), Bass Saxophone (Bass Saxophone), and Contrabass Saxophone (Contrabass Saxophone).
